A 2021 meta-analysis in the Journal of Diabetes & Metabolic Disorders pooled eight studies of spirulina in people with type-2 diabetes. It reported lower fasting blood glucose and blood lipids after spirulina, but no significant change in HbA1c, the longer-term blood-sugar marker.

SPIRULINA AND BODY WEIGHT — FIVE SMALL TRIALS

A 2019 meta-analysis in Complementary Therapies in Medicine combined five randomised trials of spirulina in overweight and obese adults. Body weight was on average 1.56 kg lower after spirulina than in the comparison groups; body mass index did not change significantly.

A 2020 meta-analysis in Clinical Nutrition ESPEN pooled 37 randomised controlled trials with 2,292 participants. The authors describe the effect of L-carnitine on body weight as modest — 1.21 kg on average — and their dose analysis placed the largest effect at about 2,000 mg a day.
