Roger Klüh (49) yesterday at Düsseldorf Airport with the steering wheel of his boat Apache Star
A black travel bag, a briefcase – that’s it. With light luggage, Roger Klüh (49) set off for Miami (USA) yesterday. On August 1, he will attempt his world record: to be the first person to cross from Florida to Cuba in a speedboat!
The most important item in his hand luggage: the steering wheel with which he will steer his Apache Star to Cuba. “My mother made me a plaque for the steering wheel as a good luck charm,” says Klüh. Engraved on it are the name of the boat and the date of the record attempt.
At 9:30 a.m. yesterday, his 11-hour flight took off. In the next two weeks, he will prepare intensively for the voyage on-site. “I have appointments with my boat builder, my navigator, and my American lawyer,” Klüh explains.
Although all permits for the record attempt are in place, there remains a small legal hurdle: the helicopter that is to accompany the boat across the Atlantic must turn back after 70 nautical miles. There is still no authorization for a landing in Cuba.
