Apache Star's Historic Return: Roger Klüh's World Record Boat Transported

Globetrotter Roger Klüh's orange powerboat APACHE STAR loaded on a transport truck.

Now, at last - a proud 17 months and eleven days after its world record journey from the USA to Cuba - a US freight forwarder working for the government in Washington has now succeeded in transporting the Apache Star initially from the Hemingway Marina to the cargo port in Mariel. As Klüh pointed out, this was only possible after a five-month lead time and with many special permits in the luggage; for example, wooden trestles suitable for transport had to be made.

The boat Apache Star of entrepreneur's son and globetrotter Roger Klüh sets course for Düsseldorf. As is well known, it had broken down during the trip from Miami to Cuba. Now, finally - a proud 17 months and eleven days after his world record trip from the USA to Cuba - a US freight forwarder working for the government in Washington has succeeded in transporting the Apache Star first from Marina Hemingway to the cargo port in Mariel. As Klüh emphasized, this was only possible after a five-month lead time and with many special permits in the luggage; for example, transportable wooden trestles had to be made.

The world record boat was then loaded yesterday and shipped on an open container to Port Everglades in the USA. This means that what the US government demanded of Roger Klüh has finally been fulfilled. The criminal file was also successfully closed last week: the Düsseldorf man was facing 20 years in prison. Now, however, it remains with a mere warning. The prison sentence and massive fines had threatened him because of a possible violation of the still existing embargo. An odyssey is coming to an end, and he seems very happy about it: "I want to have and keep the Apache Star in my home country.

  • What is the Apache Star?

  • Why did the Apache Star remain in Cuba for so long?

After the record-breaking trip, the boat broke down in Cuba. Due to the U.S.–Cuba embargo, its return required extensive government approval and special permits, which caused long delays.

  • How long did it take to transport the Apache Star back to the U.S.?

It took 17 months and 11 days before a U.S. freight forwarder was finally able to move the Apache Star from Marina Hemingway to the cargo port in Mariel and onward to Port Everglades.

  • What challenges were involved in transporting the boat?

The process required a five-month lead time, numerous U.S. government permits, and even custom-made wooden trestles to safely secure the vessel for shipping.

  • Was Roger Klüh charged for violating the embargo?

No. Although he initially faced up to 20 years in prison and heavy fines, the case was closed with only a formal warning.

  • Where is the Apache Star now?

After arriving safely in the U.S., the Apache Star set course for Düsseldorf, where Roger Klüh plans to keep it permanently.

  • What does the return of the Apache Star symbolize?
