Roger Klüh: Heute Geburtstag, morgen Weltrekord

Roger Klüh: Birthday today, world record tomorrow

Düsseldorf Roger Klüh – today he's celebrating his birthday, tomorrow he wants to set a world record. With his legendary speedboat Apache Star he hunts from Key West to Havana, Cuba. The last world records on this route were set in 1922 and 1958.

The Apache Star is powered by two Mercury power packs that develop an output of 2700 hp. At 4 p.m. German time, Roger Klüh wants to start the ambitious trip, where possible high waves pose the least danger. Objects floating in the water, such as wooden pallets, are risky. At a speed of more than 100 km/h, it is extremely difficult to spot and avoid such obstacles. The trip was preceded by two years of preparation and numerous bureaucratic hurdles had to be overcome. The political thaw between the USA and Cuba is now enabling the world record attempt, which will be celebrated at the Hemingway Yacht Club in Havana.
